THE DAIGO PARTNERSHIP

Transforming Lives Through Education, Skills, Leadership and International Collaboration

The Daigo Partnership is a pioneering collaboration between Daughters of Africa (DOAF) and the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), established in 2019 to create meaningful opportunities for young people and communities through education, vocational training, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and leadership development.

The partnership was founded on a shared commitment to addressing inequalities in access to education, skills development, employment opportunities, and personal growth. Through collaborative learning, international knowledge exchange, and community-led development, the partnership equips young people with the skills, confidence, networks, and opportunities needed to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute positively to their communities.

At its core, the Daigo Partnership connects local knowledge with global expertise, creating pathways that empower young people to become leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and active citizens capable of shaping a more prosperous future for themselves and their communities.

Why the Daigo Partnership Matters

The Gambia has one of the youngest populations in Africa, with more than 65% of citizens under the age of 25.

While this presents enormous potential for national development, many young people continue to face significant barriers, including:

  • Limited access to quality education
  • Lack of vocational and technical training opportunities
  • High youth unemployment
  • Inadequate digital literacy and technology access
  • Limited entrepreneurial support
  • Gender inequality
  • Weak pathways from education to employment
  • Insufficient exposure to international learning opportunities

These challenges often leave young people without the skills, confidence, networks, and opportunities required to build successful futures.

For some, the absence of opportunities contributes to dangerous migration journeys in search of employment and a better life. Others become vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and harmful coping mechanisms that undermine their wellbeing and future prospects.

Recognising these realities, UWE Bristol and DOAF came together to create a partnership focused on practical solutions, sustainable development, and long-term empowerment.

How the Partnership Works

The Daigo Partnership combines international collaboration with community-based action.

Working together, DOAF and UWE Bristol design and deliver programmes that provide practical learning experiences, leadership development opportunities, skills training, mentoring, and community projects.

The partnership creates opportunities for:

·       Community Learning

Training programmes that equip participants with practical knowledge and skills relevant to local development challenges.

·       Skills Development

Vocational, entrepreneurial, and digital skills training designed to improve employability and economic opportunities.

·       Leadership Development

Programmes that help young people build confidence, critical thinking skills, communication abilities, and leadership capacity.

·       International Knowledge Exchange

Opportunities for participants to learn from different perspectives, cultures, experiences, and professional practices.

·       Community-Led Development
