The Gender Promotion Initiative (GPI) is one of Daughters of Africa’s flagship community empowerment programmes designed to advance gender equality, strengthen women’s leadership, protect the rights of women and girls, and create opportunities for social and economic empowerment.
Implemented with support from development partners, including UNFPA through TANGO, the initiative works directly with women, girls, youth, community leaders, and local stakeholders to address barriers that prevent women and girls from fully participating in education, leadership, economic development, and community decision-making.
The programme adopts a holistic approach that combines awareness raising, capacity building, skills development, economic empowerment, leadership training, advocacy, and community engagement to create sustainable and transformative change.
Through the Gender Promotion Initiative, DOAF is helping build communities where women and girls are empowered, protected, respected, and equipped to achieve their full potential.
Despite significant progress, many women and girls continue to face challenges that limit their opportunities and wellbeing.
These challenges include:
- Gender inequality
- Limited access to education
- Early and forced marriage
- Gender-based violence
- Economic exclusion
- Limited leadership opportunities
- Financial dependency
- Lack of access to skills training
- Climate and environmental vulnerabilities
- Limited participation in decision-making processes
These barriers affect not only women and girls but also families, communities, and national development.
DOAF believes that empowering women and girls is one of the most effective ways to strengthen communities, reduce poverty, improve wellbeing, and promote sustainable development.
